This ‘near death experience’ is what keeps many of the victims in a ‘traumatic limbo’ quite separate to other victims of violence who have not been strangled (Ref: DFR 2022). \nStrangulation is a gendered crime. Since Strangulation Charges Since 315A was introduced\, the majority of offenders sentenced for strangulation in Queensland were male (98.3%) Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council. \nRed Rose Foundation is a national not-for-profit organisation focused on ending domestic violence\, specifically domestic violence-related deaths and suicides. \nThe Foundation’s work is broad and includes direct free support to victims of domestic violence as well as community awareness\, law reform\, training\, and research. Recently\, the foundation has brought to public attention a potentially lethal aspect of domestic violence\, strangulation \nIn 2021\, the Foundation opened Australia’s first Strangulation Trauma Centre to provide medium to long term supports to women who have experienced often sustained and repeated acts of strangulation. \n  \nTwo-day admission to the National Symposium offers: \nGlobal and International Perspectives: Acquire valuable insights from Australian subject matter experts and distinguished international guest speakers who are authorities in the field of non-lethal strangulation and partner-inflicted brain injury. \nCutting-Edge Research: The symposium is a collaborative effort with the Centre for Domestic & Family Violence Research and other noted researchers\, ensuring that the latest research and advancements in the field are shared with participants. Stay ahead of the curve and contribute to the ongoing dialogue. \nPractice Led Conversations: The symposium program will include practitioners bringing perspectives of work with trauma\, sexual violence\, brain injury and other health impacts\, justice\, cultural perspectives\, children and more. \nOpen Dialogue: Engage in meaningful discussions with professionals\, advocates\, and community members. This symposium aims to foster an open dialogue that encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences surrounding non-lethal strangulation. \nNetworking Opportunities: Connect with like-minded individuals and organisations committed to addressing the challenges posed by non-lethal strangulation. Build valuable connections and partnerships that can contribute to creating a safer and more informed community. \nProfessional Development: Elevate your expertise and capabilities through workshops and sessions tailored for professionals in the areas of domestic violence\, family violence\, sexual violence\, and related fields. She was born in Queensland and has spent most of her life living in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs. \nNina has a real passion for people and absolutely loves the opportunity to provide encouragement and support for the fantastic work being done by charities across Brisbane. Like her husband Adrian\, she believes that the sign of a strong\, healthy city is a city with a big heart.\nAs the Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust\, Nina is devoted to ensuring the Trust not only continues supporting grassroots charities that are having such a big impact in our community\, but also to enhancing Brisbane’s Reputation as a friendly and compassionate city that will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. \nIn her role as Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust\, Nina has the opportunity to make a positive impact on a number of local Brisbane charities and to chat to some of the women making a real difference in the charity sector. Did you know that as at 30 June 2021 the Brisbane Local Government Area had an estimated resident population of approximately 1\,272\,461 persons; and roughly 50% are women or identify as women; and that approximately 69.5% of those persons are aged 15-64? The 2016 Census reports that approximately 20% of people over 15 undertook voluntary work with an organisation or group. These volunteers are at the hearts and souls of the charities that Nina and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust support and are crucial to supporting Brisbane’s most vulnerable residents. \nBrisbane Women’s Club is thrilled to have the Lady Mayoress speak to us about the impact women are having on the charity sector\, particularly in relation to supporting local women of Brisbane. \n
