SUMMARY:Non-Lethal Strangulation Symposium: A National Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join a groundbreaking national conversation on Non-Lethal Strangulation. (USA) Gael is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Alliance for HOPE International.   Programs of the Alliance include National Family Justice Centre Alliance\, Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention\, Camp HOPE America\, Justice Legal Network and VOICES Survivor Network.  Gael is a former board member of the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence\, former President of the San Diego Domestic Violence Council and former Commissioner of the ABA’s Commission on Domestic Violence.  Gael has also co-authored a series of strangulation articles and five books with Casey Gwinn\, JD\, on the Family Justice Centre Movement \nThe Honorable Judge Eugene M Hyman (retired) \nMagistrate Linda Bradford-Morgan \nProfessor Heather Douglas \nDr Leah Sharman \nDr Heather Lovatt \nDr Michelle Fitts \nDr Brian Sullivan \nYasmin Johnson \nDate: Wednesday 21 February 2024 and Thursday 22 February 2024 \nLocation: Royal on the Park Hotel\, Brisbane \nTime: 8.30am – 5.00pm \nTicket includes: \n\nRegistration (2 days) and morning tea\, lunch and afternoon tea both days\nEarly Bird Pricing until 31 January 2024\nLimited Tickets Available\n\nAbout Non-Lethal Strangulation: \nWomen who have been strangled as part of the abusive pattern of behaviour perpetrated against them\, are deemed to be 800%\, more likely to be a victim of domestic homicide whether by strangulation or other forms of lethal assault (Glass et al.\, 2008). \nOne in four women will experience Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in their lifetimes\, and of women at high risk\, up to 68% will experience near-fatal strangulation by their partner with 35% of strangulation victims strangled during sexual assault (Ref: Training Institute for Strangulation Prevention San Diego) \nStrangulation is the one offence within a violent relationship where the victim believes that they are about to die and often can do nothing about it. This ‘near death experience’ is what keeps many of the victims in a ‘traumatic limbo’ quite separate to other victims of violence who have not been strangled (Ref: DFR 2022). \nStrangulation is a gendered crime. Since Strangulation Charges Since 315A was introduced\, the majority of offenders sentenced for strangulation in Queensland were male (98.3%) Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council. \nRed Rose Foundation is a national not-for-profit organisation focused on ending domestic violence\, specifically domestic violence-related deaths and suicides. \nThe Foundation’s work is broad and includes direct free support to victims of domestic violence as well as community awareness\, law reform\, training\, and research. Recently\, the foundation has brought to public attention a potentially lethal aspect of domestic violence\, strangulation \nIn 2021\, the Foundation opened Australia’s first Strangulation Trauma Centre to provide medium to long term supports to women who have experienced often sustained and repeated acts of strangulation. \n  \nTwo-day admission to the National Symposium offers: \nGlobal and International Perspectives: Acquire valuable insights from Australian subject matter experts and distinguished international guest speakers who are authorities in the field of non-lethal strangulation and partner-inflicted brain injury. \nCutting-Edge Research: The symposium is a collaborative effort with the Centre for Domestic & Family Violence Research and other noted researchers\, ensuring that the latest research and advancements in the field are shared with participants. Stay ahead of the curve and contribute to the ongoing dialogue. \nPractice Led Conversations: The symposium program will include practitioners bringing perspectives of work with trauma\, sexual violence\, brain injury and other health impacts\, justice\, cultural perspectives\, children and more. \nOpen Dialogue: Engage in meaningful discussions with professionals\, advocates\, and community members. This symposium aims to foster an open dialogue that encourages the exchange of ideas and experiences surrounding non-lethal strangulation. \nNetworking Opportunities: Connect with like-minded individuals and organisations committed to addressing the challenges posed by non-lethal strangulation. Build valuable connections and partnerships that can contribute to creating a safer and more informed community. \nProfessional Development: Elevate your expertise and capabilities through workshops and sessions tailored for professionals in the areas of domestic violence\, family violence\, sexual violence\, and related fields. Gain insights from leading experts and practitioners actively addressing non-lethal strangulation and partner-inflicted brain injuries. \nAustralian First: This symposium marks an Australian First in addressing non-lethal strangulation comprehensively. Be part of history as we collectively strive to raise awareness\, foster collaboration\, and drive positive change. \nWho Should Attend: Healthcare Professionals\, Legal and Law Enforcement Professionals\, Child Protection and Social Services Professionals\, Education Professionals\, Therapists and Counsellors\, Workplace and Human Resource Professionals\, Not-for-Profit Organizations and Community Services\, First Responders and Emergency Services\, Government Agencies\, Professionals in the Housing Sector\, Middle Management\, and Domestic and Family Violence Sector Professionals. \n  \nDon’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of a transformative two day event that aims to make a lasting impact on the way we address non-lethal strangulation and partner inflicted brain injury in Australia. \nTogether\, we can #ChangeTheEnding.

She was born in Queensland and has spent most of her life living in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs. \nNina has a real passion for people and absolutely loves the opportunity to provide encouragement and support for the fantastic work being done by charities across Brisbane. Like her husband Adrian\, she believes that the sign of a strong\, healthy city is a city with a big heart.\nAs the Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust\, Nina is devoted to ensuring the Trust not only continues supporting grassroots charities that are having such a big impact in our community\, but also to enhancing Brisbane’s Reputation as a friendly and compassionate city that will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. \nIn her role as Chair of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust\, Nina has the opportunity to make a positive impact on a number of local Brisbane charities and to chat to some of the women making a real difference in the charity sector. Did you know that as at 30 June 2021 the Brisbane Local Government Area had an estimated resident population of approximately 1\,272\,461 persons; and roughly 50% are women or identify as women; and that approximately 69.5% of those persons are aged 15-64? The 2016 Census reports that approximately 20% of people over 15 undertook voluntary work with an organisation or group. These volunteers are at the hearts and souls of the charities that Nina and the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust support and are crucial to supporting Brisbane’s most vulnerable residents. \nBrisbane Women’s Club is thrilled to have the Lady Mayoress speak to us about the impact women are having on the charity sector\, particularly in relation to supporting local women of Brisbane. \n

SUMMARY:Women in Leadership - Sports Management - Event Invitation
DESCRIPTION:The National Council of Women of Queensland Inc welcome you to attend the first of our series discussing non-traditional pathways. In this series\, we look to share and discuss alternative careers for women in our society. \nFor our first session\, we have invited a panel of three successful sports management CEOs to give us their insights into female leadership in sport – Breeanna Brock (CEO of Brisbane Lions AFLW)\, Kate Davies (CEO of Netball QLD and the QLD Firebirds)\, and Alison Lyons (CEO of Hockey QLD). \n  \nAbout\nOur panel will discuss various issues in sports management and leadership\, including why there is a minority of women in senior leadership positions in the sports industry and what can be done to encourage and support more females into these roles. \nAll profits from this event will go to supporting Ukrainian women in QLD (see further details on this below). \nDate: Thursday\, 5 May 2022 \nTime: 5:45pm for a 6:15pm start\, finish at 7:30pm \nVenue: Morningside Panthers Australian Football Club\, 4 Oak Street\, Hawthorne \nCost: $25 includes tea/coffee and a snack on arrival. \nRSVP: 3 May 2022 \n  \nBook\nTickets are on sale via Humantix\n  \nAbout the Speakers\nBreeanna Brock (CEO of Brisbane Lions AFLW)\nBreeanna Brock was the first female CEO to be appointed in the AFL. In her nine -year tenure in female football\, she has cemented Queensland’s reputation as one of the powerhouse states for women’s AFL. \nBy establishing the Brisbane Lions inaugural women’s team\, who won the AFLW Premiership in 2021\, Breeanna has created a full playing pathway for the women and girls of Queensland. With access to this elite\, high performing environment\, females are no longer forced to abandon a game they love due to lack of professional opportunity. \nAwarded the AFL Football Woman of the Year award in 2018\, Breeanna’s work is slowly dismantling age-old thinking around female representation in sport\, to create a more level\, gender-balanced\, playing field.  “In my current role\, I am able to combine my passion for AFL with helping women to achieve equality and success – both on and off the sports field.” \n  \nAlison Lyons (CEO of Hockey QLD)\nAlison was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Hockey Queensland in September 2019. She has 15 years working in the sports industry both in Australia and overseas. Before moving back to Queensland she spent 7 years with Gymnastics Victoria and in that time progressed her career from Participation Coordinator to General Manager then on to the CEO role at HQ. Alison is the deputy Chair of Qsport and has held a previous board position with Softball Victoria. \nAlison is a mentor in the Women Sport Australia mentoring program and is passionate about advocating for more women in leadership positions. Alison grew up in Far North Queensland but has spent much of her adult life travelling\, she is excited to be back in Queensland especially with the 2032 Olympics on the horizon.\n  \nKate Davies (CEO of  Netball QLD and the QLD Firebirds)\nIn January Kate Davies was appointed Chief Executive Officer\, Netball Queensland and the Queensland Firebirds. She is particularly looking forward to making a contribution to the Firebirds\,\nconsidered to be one of the most iconic sporting teams in Queensland. \nDavies has extensive experience across the public\, private and not-for-profit sectors\, including Senior Executive roles with local and state government\, Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket. \n  \nModerator\nRonda Nix OAM\nThe Moderator for the evening will be Ronda Nix\, NCWQ Committee Member and Bursary Coordinator for the Queensland Government Office for Women Bursaries. \nA former sports administrator and sports official\, Ronda was awarded an OAM in The Order of Australia in 2013 for her service to hockey \n  \n  \n  \nProceeds to Support Ukrainian women in QLD\nAll profits from this event will go to supporting Ukrainian women in QLD through Ukrainian Community of QLD. \nThe UCQ Inc Ukraine Crisis and Humanitarian Assistance Council is raising funds to be able to provide urgent care and to meet specific needs for Ukrainian refugees\, such as specialist medical treatment\, crisis accommodation\, disability equipment and foods etc.  \nThis is especially important whilst Ukrainian refugees do not currently have medical access\, education access and the right to work as they arrive to Australia. \nFor more information\, refer to their website. \nExtra donations for this cause can also be made via the booking link (not tax deductible)\, or visit their website directly. \n  \nGet Your Ticket Today!
