NCWQ welcomes microbeads phase out
The recent pledge made by Coles and Woolworths to phase out products containing plastic microbeads is welcomed by The National Council of Women of Queensland Inc (NCWQ).
The two major retailers recently announced their commitment to remove products containing microbeads from Australian shelves by 2017, following a growing global movement to ban the tiny plastic particles that pollute waterways and oceans.
“We would like to congratulate Coles and Woolworths on their initiative and public commitment to removing these environmentally damaging products from their shelves,” said NCQW President, Annette Lourigan.
“We also recognise a Federal announcement made by Environment Minister Greg Hunt regarding a voluntary phase-out of the beads by 1 July 2018 across Australian states and territories,” said Ms Lourigan.
“We strongly believe that the independent decision made by Coles and Woolworths, along with other companies and countries across the globe, highlights the need for further action to be taken by the Australian government on this issue than what has been committed.”
“We would like to recognise the efforts of our members in NCWQ, particularly Pat Pepper, our Environmental Adviser, who continue to campaign tirelessly for environmental issues such as this that affect our local and global communities.”
