This year’s NCWQ bursary award ceremony was one to remember. Among the many special women being recognised for their achievements and talents, was Leah Lever.
Receiving the NCWQ Elements Living bursary, Leah was recognised for her achievements in a number of areas.
This bursary, sponsored by Chiou See Anderson, the owner/Managing Director of Elements Third Age Living, Springwood, is a long-term sponsor of the NCWQ bursary program. The focus of this bursary reflects her passion for improving the care and life style for seniors. The value of the NCWQ Elements Living Bursary is $1,000.00
To apply for this bursary, the following criteria must have addressed the following:
- A female, under the age of 25
- Enrolled in full-time studies or commencing full-time studies within 6 months of application
- Able to demonstrate commitment to leadership through active participation in either a religious or community based organisation with the intent of improving the lives of seniors.
- An Australian citizen or Permanent Resident of Australia
NCWQ is very pleased to award this bursary to Leah in 2018.
From the age of 12 Leah has made a contribution to the welfare of elderly people, particularly those with dementia, by giving solo concerts at Aged Care Facilities. She was the youngest registered volunteer entertainer for Qld Health Metro Region.
Leah tailored her repertoire to stimulate the memories of her audience and told the story of a couple, the wife with dementia, for whom she sang their special wedding song and the husband smiled as he held her hand and every now and then she said she saw a spark of recognition from the wife. She still sings this song although the wife has died, but the elderly man sits with her photo and can reminisce.
Leah has received many accolades from her Community for the work she undertakes, and although still only 15 has been fast tracked to University and is now being mentored by Mirusia. She is already part of a Tribute band and is putting together a touring Musical Melodies show.
Because of her age it is necessary for her parents to drive her to campus and she is hoping to use the Bursary to offset the cost of this travel and hopefully to purchase some new sound equipment.
