The Domestic Violence Action Centre (DVAC) is planning some exciting events for Domestic & Family Violence Prevention Month in May 2016. Throughout the month of May- One Million Stars Project: DVAC will have a display at Riverlink, Ipswich. Weaving Communities of Courage to End Violence. DVAC and Ipswich Community Groups that have participated in their ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ campaign which aims to unite people around the world by making and displaying coloured ribbon stars. The goal is to weave 1 million stars and to display them throughout Queensland between 2012 – 2018; each star represents a commitment to resist violence and honours people’s right to safety and respect.
Wed 4th May 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm- Walk Against Domestic & Family Violence and Candle Lighting Ceremony: A community march to create awareness and bring an end to Domestic & Family Violence. Join DAVC and your community with your signs and voice. The night also includes a Candle Lighting Ceremony to remember and acknowledge women and children who have died from D&FV.
Wed 11th May 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm Film and Pizza Night for young people: DVAC will be showing the Film created by young people from the Ipswich region “Four Stories – Resisting Violences, Reclaiming Lives” . The film focusses on tactics of domestic and family violence through young peoples eyes, experiences and language. The tactics include Verbal, Emotional, Physical, Social and Technological Abuse. DVAC will also celebrate some of the hopes, knowledge and skills people have in reclaiming their lives from these tactics and their effects. Desired audience from 15 to 25 yrs.
Sat 14th May Women in League Event: held at the JETS Leagues Club (Flyer will be available soon) An afternoon of indulgence celebrating women’s contribution to rugby league. The guest speaker will be talking about bystander approach to addressing D&FV
Sun 15th May 10 am to 2 pm Motorcycle Ride for Awareness of Domestic & Family Violence: (Flyer will be available soon) This event is organised by the Ulysses Club Inc. Ipswich Branch with funds raised from the event donated to DVAC. We are collecting the motorcycle participations from six pick up points around SEQ which we envisage will arrive at the end venue at Brothers Leagues Club Ipswich at 10 am. The event at the end venue is for all Community to attend. The event is supported by DVAC, the Ipswich City Council and a grant from the Queensland Government. Thurs 26th May Luncheon at Gatton Cultural Centre – Flyer will be available soon. Community education and awareness raising in partnership with Lockyer Community Centre.
Thurs 26th May Movie presentation “Call me Dad” – Flyer will be available soon. Invitation to community and professionals to attend. “Call Me Dad” is a story about men who have perpetrated, or are at risk of perpetrating, family violence. At stake is the safety of children and partners, the stability of families, and the power we as a society have to intervene. These men struggle to maintain intimate relationships without resorting to abuse, physical or otherwise. We follow these men over several months, as they attempt to change themselves, and heal fragile bonds with their loved ones.
