NCWQ Health Report – Mental Health by Dr Kathryn Mainstone, NCWQ Health Adviser. In Kathyrn’s July Report, she drew attention to the National Youth Mental Health Foundation survey which found that of the 3,575 young people who received services at a Headspace centre between 25th May and 5th June 2020, 74% reported that their mental health was worse since the outbreak of COVID-19. As part of a recent submission to the Office of Women and Violence Prevention, Department of Justice and Attorney-General, Queensland Government on the New Queensland Women Strategy, a segment on mental health included these facts with core recommendations.

The main Queensland government aims behind the establishment of Renewable Energy Zones are to :- foster jobs and growth as part of COVID-19 economic recovery; and help Queensland reach 50% renewables by 2030. The essential point that was not mentioned in the aims is the reason that we need to reach 50% renewables by 2030. We provide four core recommendations.

Vale Emeritus Prof Dr Mary Mahoney AO

Emeritus Prof Mary Mahoney AO recently passed after a short illness. On behalf of the NCWQ, we would like to pass on our condolences to Dr Mahoney’s family and friends, and we share with you this article, originally published on the University of Queensland. NCWQ and the Queensland Medical Women’s Society (QMWS), celebrated her enormous contribution to the advancement of women in medicine and advocacy for women in leadership in happier pre-pandemic times in 2019 at the NCWQ Bursary High Tea for the QMWS 90th anniversary.

Researchers at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) have shown that without major disturbances from cyclones, coral bleaching and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks, coral reefs can recover as measured by hard coral cover.  But that the composition of coral species can change.  However, if the frequency and severity of disturbances increases, as expected from climate change, recovery could be more difficult.
